Pair of Antique Ushak Runners

1900 - 1920
Description

Woven in the early 20th is this lovely pale blue pair of Ushak runners, very much in keeping with the Maple & Co production of this time, the blues are lovely shades of dye and with golden yellow minor borders, they are full of life.  Condition is excellent on both runners, a good solid wool pile on both, please look at all the close up images to see their colours and great pile.

The longer runner measures 363 x 92 cm and the shorter one measuring 340 x 93 cm.  We would entertain splitting this pair of runners up if necessary too.

Ushak rugs originate from the city of Usak in western Anatolia, Turkey. They are characterised by their distinctive hand-knotted construction, soft colour palettes, and stylized geometric or floral medallion motifs.

Traditional Ushak carpets are hand-knotted using high-grade wool spun on a cotton or wool foundation. They typically employ the symmetrical Ghiordes (Turkish) knot, resulting in a plush texture and durable structure.

Authentic pieces feature hand-spun wool dyed with natural vegetable pigments, showing subtle tonal variations known as abrash. The underside displays slightly irregular hand-knotted backing, and the weave is soft and pliable compared to machine-made imitations.
