Delftware refers to tin-glazed earthenware produced primarily in and around Delft in the Netherlands from the 16th century onwards. Eighteenth-century pieces frequently feature blue and white cobalt decoration inspired by imported Chinese Kraak porcelain and Ming motifs.

These ceramics were shaped from local clay bodies and coated in an opaque white tin glaze. Cobalt oxide pigment was painted onto the unbaked glaze before a single high-temperature kiln firing fused the brushwork and glaze together.

Authentic early pieces usually show soft, reddish-buff earthenware bodies visible at rim chips, pinholes or glaze crawl marks, along with hand-painted brushwork showing subtle variation rather than modern printed transfer patterns.
