This wonderfully curious folky watercolour conversation piece shows a couple seated in a well-furnished drawing room. Looking a bit sever and dressed in black, the lady appears to be in morning though her companion is more gaily attired in striped trousers and a patterned waistcoat.
The walls of the room are covered in a striped wallpaper whilst the floor has a floral carpet. The paintings on the walls are quite eccentric - one appears to show a dead rabbit or hare!
Keeping the couple company is their cute little dog lying in front of the fire and goldfish swimming in a glass bowl placed on a tripod table. The whole tableau is most curious especially as the room is deliberately shown to be somewhat down-at-heel with stains to the wallpaper.
Added to that, the watercolour has some dust-soiling and there is a vertical crease down the middle from having been stored unframed. There are also a couple of small nicks to the side edges which are visible within the frame.
The watercolour lacks any inscription or signature so its story is lost to history. It is presented in a handsome flat profile bird''s eye maple frame.
