An Excellent Georgian Old Sheffield Plate Wirework Basket

Description

A delightful and rather rare Georgian wirework basket in desirable Old Sheffield Plate. The shaped rectangular body has a solid base with wonderful intertwined wirework, extending to the fully cast floral rim, which was very typical of the era. The swing handle is also of wire work and has a central oval panel with vacant cartouche. An excellent decorative item, useful for bread, cakes or fruit. Dimensions below.

Old Sheffield Plate was developed in the 18th century by fusing a layer of silver over copper prior to forming objects. Wirework baskets were created using drawn silver-plated wire, shaped into intricate open lattice patterns for serving baked goods or fruit.

Silversmiths pulled silver-plated copper wire through dies to achieve consistent thickness, then hand-bent and soldered the strands into structured frames. A solid central base plate and a moveable swing handle were attached to complete the assembly.

Authentic items frequently display subtle copper show-through, known as bleeding, where the silver layer has worn thin over time on high points. They may also feature wrapped metal edges or inlaid sterling silver shields designed for engraved monograms.

Position the basket on a sideboard top or dining table centre as a refined table accessory. It can be left empty as a sculptural accent or filled with fresh fruit or rolled linen napkins to contrast modern decor with historical metalwork.
