Description

Kurdish tribes of north west persia,

First quarter 20th century.

Big sized long rug often referred to in the trade as a kelleh.

Central alternating design of botehs on a dark blue ground.

Has nice twin yellow coloured borders.

Hand washed and de-dusted. Pile is good has had approx half a dozen professional reweaves and reinforced from rear with hessian patches. All imaged. Priced accordingly.

Ends and sides are secure. Big carpet for the money.

10 foot 2 inches by 5 foot 5 inches. 311cm X 166cm. At widest points. Fringes not measured in size. All woollen construction.

A Kelleh rug refers to a specific traditional Persian size format, typically long and wide, historically intended to sit at the head of a rooms central seating layout. Kurdish examples are hand-knotted by weavers in Kurdistan, featuring distinctive tribal motifs, saturated natural dyes, and durable wool construction.

Traditional Kurdish rugs are hand-knotted using locally sourced hand-spun sheeps wool for the pile, often bound onto a wool or cotton foundation. The yarns are dyed using natural plant and mineral sources, such as madder root for reds and indigo for blues.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-tied knot irregularities, flexible foundations, and natural dye variations known as abrash throughout the pile. The reverse side displays clear, visible knot structure without rubber backing or synthetic web layers.
