For Sale by LTANTIQUES.CO.UK
Description

This exquisite Victorian credenza, dating from circa 1880, is a stunning example, offered in excellent showroom condition. The piece is crafted from fine burr walnut, known for its rich, swirling grain patterns and vibrant color, which give the credenza a distinguished presence. Its bow-fronted shape adds a sense of elegance and fluidity, making it a standout piece in any room.

What sets this credenza apart is its unusual black inlay, which enhances the overall design and adds an unexpected contrast to the warm tones of the walnut. The central door features an eye-catching inlaid design, skillfully executed with intricate marquetry details that draw the eye and showcase the meticulous craftsmanship of the era.

Flanking the central door are two beautifully bowed glass doors, each offering a clear view of the interior, which is fitted with two fixed shelves. This design not only highlights the elegant curvature of the credenza but also allows for practical storage and display, making it a versatile piece.

The top of the credenza is particularly noteworthy, with carefully selected burr walnut veneer creating a seamless and highly attractive surface that is both visually stunning and finely finished. The credenza is further enhanced with brass ormolu mounts and edging, adding a touch of luxury and refinement to the piece.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian credenza is a large, ornate side cabinet typically designed with a central cupboard flanked by curved glazed doors or open display shelves. Popularised during the mid-to-late nineteenth century, these cabinets were used in formal dining rooms and drawing rooms to display fine china, glassware, and decorative objects while storing household linens.

Victorian credenzas were constructed using solid hardwood frames faced with highly figured burr walnut veneers. Intricate marquetry patterns were inlaid using contrasting woods such as boxwood, ebony, and fruitwood, and finished with gilt-bronze or brass ormolu mounts and glass panels.

Authentic nineteenth-century pieces feature hand-cut marquetry inlays, natural hand-grained burr walnut veneer, and hand-cast metal mounts. Inspecting the interior reveals period-appropriate construction methods, such as hand-dovetailed drawer joints, oak or pine secondary drawer linings, and natural age-related shrinkage or oxidisation.

A Victorian credenza serves as a focal point in contemporary dining rooms, entryways, or living areas. Balance the rich wood tones and elaborate marquetry by pairing the cabinet with understated modern artwork above it and minimalist decorative ceramics on its top surface.

To preserve the veneer and marquetry, position the credenza away from direct sunlight, radiators, and extreme humidity variations. Dust the wood regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a beeswax polish annually to protect the original finish; avoid chemical cleaners or abrasive polishes.
