Description

This is a stunning set of 4 English late 17th century Charles II oak 'Derbyshire' chairs which date to circa 1760 / 1780. It is very rare to find o set of chairs of this period.

The chairs have a horizontal carved and arched splats which have been deeply carved. To the top the carved splat is finished with two finials and is supported by two full turnings the lower splat is finished with three finials.

The supports to the splats are also superbly carved to the top and have lovely applied half turnings.

The legs to the front are beautifully turned and joined by a turned stretcher. The legs to the sides are joined by double plain stretchers and the rear are jointed by plain stretchers making them nice and sturdy.

As you can see from the photographs these chair are a superb rich color.

The approximate MAXIMUM dimensions are:

- 17 1/2 inches (45 cm) wide.

- 18 1/4 inches (46.5 cm) deep across chair and 14 inches (35.5 cm) deep across seat

- 39 3/4 inches (101 cm) high to top of chair and 18 3/4 inches (47.5 cm) high to top of the seat

There are slight variations in the dimensions due to the handmade nature of these chairs.

AGE: The chair are Charles II chairs and date to circa 1760 / 1780.

CONDITION:

The chairs are is in nice condition as can be seen from the photographs especially considering the are over 240 years old, but as with any piece of antique there are knocks / marks / shrinkage lines commensurate with age and use but this just adds to the rustic charm of these chairs. There are also some long dead woodworm holes as would be expected with antique chairs of this age.
