Persian Sarouk Carpet, Circa 1930, 3.50m X 2.72m

1920 - 1940
Description

Often referred to as 'American' Sarouks, this group of fine central Persian carpets were woven from around 1920 until the 1940s, and exported to the United States in large quantities. In the last quarter of the 20th century many of the finest examples which reappeared with American dealers and auctioneers were bought by Europeans and ended up in Germany, Austria and the UK. This lovely carpet is one of those 're-imports'. Finely knotted with soft fleecy wool, it has a lovely soft red colour and a restrained repeating floral design which is very easy on the eye. The secondary colours are also all subtle and pleasing. Ideal for all types of decorative settings. Professionally cleaned. Only minor signs of wear and a few minor repairs, otherwise excellent condition. This is a very desirable and decorative carpet.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Sarouk carpets are hand-knotted textiles originating from the Arak region of Iran, known for dense wool pile, structured floral spray designs, and rich red or blue colour palettes.

These carpets are constructed with hand-spun wool pile woven tightly onto a durable cotton warp and weft foundation using asymmetric Persian knotting techniques.

Authentic 1930s examples feature heavyweight, dense pile, detached floral spray field patterns, characteristic deep rose or terracotta grounds, and thick hand-bound edges.

Anchor a living or dining space by positioning the carpet centrally under key furniture pieces, allowing the complex botanical pattern to contrast with neutral modern upholstery.

Vacuum regularly using suction only without a rotating brush, rotate the piece annually to ensure even foot traffic distribution, and seek professional rug cleaning when required.
