Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An overmantel mirror is a large wall mirror designed specifically to sit directly above a fireplace mantelpiece. Popularised during the 18th and 19th centuries, these mirrors feature decorative frames decorated with water gilding, oil gilding, or moulded gesso detailing to reflect natural light across drawing rooms.

Antique gilt mirrors from this era typically feature a carved softwood or hardwood base frame, covered with layers of gesso plaster to create crisp decorative mouldings. Gold leaf was then applied using traditional water gilding techniques over red or yellow clay bole, often backed by silvered mercury or nitrate glass plates.

Authentic 19th-century mirrors exhibit signs of hand-carving, minor craquelure or flaking in the gesso, and clay bole peeking through worn areas of gilding. The reverse usually shows pine backboards, hand-forged fittings, and age-related oxidisation or foxing on the original mirror plate.

Position the mirror directly above a main fireplace, console table, or architectural focal point to enhance spatial depth and reflect room lighting. Pairing gold leaf finishes with contrasting wall paint or minimalist contemporary furnishings creates a balanced dialogue between classic heritage and modern design.

Clean the frame gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush or feather duster to remove loose dust without touching the delicate gold leaf. Avoid liquid solvents, chemical sprays, or wet cloths, as moisture dissolves water-gilded surfaces and damages underlying gesso.
