Staffordshire Pottery Newfoundland, C. 1850. Rare Large Size.

A rare, oversized Staffordshire pottery figure of a Newfoundland, c. 1850. The hound being much larger than the usual model, with much finer modelling, particularly in the face of the dog, with his mouth open, to reveal his tongue and teeth, whilst having a doleful expression.
 
Painted with black spots, feathered at the edges, his tongue red. He wears a gilt collar and locket.
 
Set upon an underglaze cobalt blue mound base, heightened in gilt.
 
Whilst it is difficult to judge the size of the figure with photographs, the usual model of this dog, is about half the size of this example.
 
Height – 17.5 cm, 6 7/8”.
 
Length – 16 cm, 6 1/4”.
 
Depth – 6.7 cm, 2 5/8”.
 
Condition – Very minor wear to the overglaze black enamel. No damage. No restoration.
