A Victorian overmantel mirror is a decorative wall mirror specifically designed during the reign of Queen Victoria (18371901) to sit above a fireplace mantelpiece. These mirrors were proportioned to fill the chimney breast, reflecting candlelight and enhancing the sense of space in formal reception rooms.

These mirrors were typically constructed from carved timber framing coated with gesso and overlaid with silver leaf or gilding. The reflective plate consisted of hand-blown float glass, which was silvered on the reverse using a chemical solution containing silver nitrate.

Authentic nineteenth-century examples often exhibit slight oxidisation or dark speckling on the mirror glass, known as foxing. The reverse usually features pine backing boards, and the frame shows signs of wear to the silver leaf layer, revealing the reddish or grey clay bole beneath.
