Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian overmantel mirrors feature a flat base designed to sit directly atop a fireplace mantelpiece, often paired with arched upper corners and ribbed or moulded frames. Silvered leaf finishes were widely used during the nineteenth century to provide a bright, reflective frame that lightened period drawing rooms.

These mirrors were built using softwood or hardwood backings overlaid with gesso or plaster mouldings, which were then coated in silver leaf or silver gilding. The reflective mirror plate typically consisted of mercury glass or early nitrate-silvered glass.

Authentic nineteenth-century pieces feature original timber backing boards, visible hand-cut joinery, and natural foxing or oxidisation within the glass plate. Wear to the silvered finish often reveals the underlying gesso or clay bole layers.

Positioning a silvered mirror above a fireplace surround or mounting it above a hallway console table adds visual depth and bounces ambient light throughout the room. The understated tone of silver leaf complements both contemporary monochrome rooms and traditional period schemes.

Dust the frame gently using a dry, soft microfibre cloth or light feather duster to prevent flaking of delicate leafing. Avoid damp cloths or liquid polish on the frame, and clean the glass plate with minimal moisture applied directly to the cloth rather than the mirror face.
