Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Smokers Bow, also known as a Captains chair, is a low-backed Victorian armchair characterised by a steam-bent continuous armrail, turned baluster spindles, and a shaped wooden saddle seat, traditionally used in clubs, offices, and public houses during the 19th century.

These chairs were typically constructed using regional English hardwoods, featuring a solid elm saddle seat for durability and split-resistant properties, with turned beech or ash spindles, legs, and steam-bent arm rails.

Authentic Victorian examples feature hand-turned baluster spindles, wedged mortise and tenon joints, natural wear patterns on the seat and armrests, and a solid wood saddle seat showing historic adze or lathe tool marks rather than modern machine finishes.

Position this chair alongside a dark timber desk, within a reading nook paired with a bronze floor lamp, or as an accent armchair in a hallway or study setting to introduce historical texture.

Preserve the original timber finish by dusting regularly with a soft cloth and applying a natural beeswax polish twice yearly, keeping the furniture away from direct heat sources and damp environments to prevent wood movement or splitting.
