A Rare George V Silver Map Measurer

1900 - 1920
Description

An extremely rare silver map measurer or opisometer from the reign of King George V. Opisometers are desirable items, used mainly for measuring curved lines on maps such as roads and rivers. The scroll wheel is placed in contact with the curved line to be measured and run along its length, whilst the two dials give accurate readings in various helpful measurements. Fitted with an attaching ball and loop to the top for a fob chain or chatelaine and rarely found in hallmarked silver it would make a superb and interesting collector's piece with a practical use. Condition :- Very good, with no dents or splits to the silver. Slight staining to the dial on one side at the top, both dials clear and readable. One face has a crack to the glass, which does not affect use and is commensurate with age and use.

Hallmarks :- Clear and readable.

Maker :- John Henry Hill (1917-26).

Date :- London C1920.

Length from attaching loop to scroll wheel :- 6.5 cms.

Diameter :- 3.8 cms.

Depth :- 1 cm.
