Description

Interesting mid 19th.c. Chinese elm side table c.1860. Traditional construction with a cleated border to the top with a deep moulded edge to each side. Raised on square legs with a shaped block foot. Each leg is joined to the underside of the table with unusual curved and chamfered 'giants arm' braces. Coloured lacquered finish with the grain visible, a little chipped and worn in places to reveal a red ground below. Presented as found in good condition, solid and sturdy.

19th-century Chinese provincial furniture, produced during the Qing dynasty, is characterized by functional form, simple lines, and exposed timber grain. Local cabinetmakers employed region-specific woods like elm and finished pieces with protective natural lacquers or oils.

These tables were typically constructed from Northern or Southern elm (Yumu) using complex mortise-and-tenon joinery without metal nails or glue. The surface was traditionally treated with multiple coats of natural lacquer to resist moisture and wear.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-carved joinery marks, natural patination, and uneven wear patterns along the foot terminals and edges. Original lacquer finishes often demonstrate subtle craquelure or age-related surface variation.

A dark lacquered side table acts as an anchoring accent piece when placed alongside contemporary upholstered seating. Its clean architectural lines allow it to blend seamlessly into modern, minimalist, or eclectic interior schemes.
