19th Century French Empire Period Guéridon

19th century
Description

An Early 19th Century French Empire Period Marble Topped Guéridon or Centre Table.

The marble top has a deep and unusually complex edge moulding which also continues on the sides. This is a great sign of quality and unusual attention to detail on the part of the maker and designer. The marble itself is primarily white with grey and black veining and is highly attractive, complementing the colours used in the body of the table perfectly. It is

standing on a tripartite platform base with three tapering parcel gilt columns supporting the frieze. The gilded sections of the columns have fine leaf carved detail on them whilst the plainer sections have been painted in imitation of bronze. The veneered sections of the table are executed in walnut.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A gueridon is a circular centre or accent table that originated in France, becoming widely prominent during the 19th-century Empire period through designs influenced by ancient Greek, Roman, and Egyptian architecture.

These tables were typically crafted using dense mahogany or rich mahogany veneers, topped with heavy marble slabs, and complemented by ebonised columns, gilt-bronze mounts, or gold leaf carvings.

Authentic pieces feature neoclassical architectural proportions, hand-cut joinery, ebonised or gilded structural elements, thick marble tops, and heavy tripartite or triform base structures.

A gueridon works effectively as a focal centrepiece in an entryway foyer, positioned between a pair of tailored armchairs, or styled in an alcove to introduce classical architectural balance.

Clean the marble surface using pH-neutral cleaners while avoiding acidic substances, polish timber elements with natural beeswax, and keep the table positioned away from direct radiator heat.
