Oak Joint or Joyned Stool

19th century
Description

Oak Stool from the welsh marches, pegged construction and wear as expected for an item that’s been dragged around damp cold flagstone farmhouse floors. We don’t think it’s as early as it’s trying to be so I’ve suggested Victorian.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A joint stool, historically rendered as a joyned stool, is a wooden seating form made by a joiner using mortise and tenon joints secured with wooden pegs. They served as primary seating prior to the widespread adoption of chairs in early modern Europe.

Traditional joint stools were constructed from solid timber, typically oak, using precise hand-cut mortise and tenon joinery held together with wooden dowels or pegs rather than metal nails or modern glues.

Authentic period joint stools feature evidence of hand-planed timber, irregular pegged construction, authentic wear patterns around the lower stretchers from foot placement, and natural oxidation within the timber grain.

An antique joint stool functions effectively as an occasional side table beside an armchair, a plant stand, or a decorative accent piece within a fireplace alcove or hallway.

Maintain timber antiques by dusting regularly with a soft cloth and applying beeswax polish annually, avoiding direct heat sources and chemical cleaners to preserve the natural patina.
