Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A joint stool, historically written as a joyned stool, is a form of seating constructed by a joiner using mortise and tenon joints held together with wooden pegs. Popular in sixteenth and seventeenth century England, these sturdy wooden stools served as primary household seating prior to the widespread adoption of chairs.

Traditional joint stools were predominantly crafted from native solid English oak, though regional variations occasionally utilised fruitwood, walnut, or elm. The construction relied on hand-planed timber, hand-turned baluster legs, and heavy perimeter stretchers for structural stability.

Authentic period joint stools feature hand-drawn wooden peg construction, irregular tool marks, and natural shrinkage across the grain over time. Original pieces often display uneven wear on the lower stretchers where feet rested, along with deep oxidisation and patination in protected crevices.

A joint stool functions exceptionally well as an occasional side table beside a low arm chair, a plant stand, or a decorative element placed near a fireplace hearth. Its compact footprint and rich wood tones add warmth and historic contrast to contemporary spaces.

Maintain dark oak by dusting regularly with a soft, dry lint-free cloth and applying a high-quality beeswax paste once or twice a year. Keep the piece away from direct heat sources and excessive humidity to prevent the timber from splitting or warping.
