We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Patented by the Lumiere brothers in 1903 and commercially introduced in 1907, the autochrome was the first commercially viable additive colour photography process. It utilised dyed potato starch grains applied to a glass plate to capture full-colour transparent images.

An autochrome plate consists of a glass pane coated with a random mosaic layer of microscopic potato starch grains dyed orange-red, green, and violet-blue. This light-filtering layer was filled with carbon black powder, sealed with varnish, and overlaid with a light-sensitive silver halide emulsion.

Authentic autochromes exhibit a distinctive pointillist or grainy microscopic texture under magnification due to the potato starch distribution. They are glass transparencies designed for illumination rather than paper prints, displaying muted, painterly colour tones characteristic of early dye technology.

Glass transparencies and autochromes are best positioned where natural or artificial light can pass through them, such as on a deep window sill or integrated into a light box. Placing them alongside dark timber furnishings or brass curiosity displays highlights their historic aesthetic.

Glass autochromes are sensitive to moisture, direct sunlight, and heat exposure. Dust the glass surfaces lightly with a dry microfibre cloth without applying liquid solvents, and keep the plates in a climate-controlled environment to prevent emulsion peeling or colour degradation.
