Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A bureau plat is a French form of flat-top writing table that originated during the reign of Louis XIV in the late 17th century. It typically features a rectangular top inset with leather, shallow drawers contained within the apron, and decorative gilt-bronze mounts.

These writing tables are traditionally crafted using solid timber sub-frames, such as oak or pine, which are clad in decorative wood veneers like kingwood, rosewood, or tulipwood. They feature cast and chased gilt-bronze (ormolu) corner mounts and handles, along with a central leather writing surface.

Authentic 19th-century pieces display signs of hand-craftsmanship, including hand-cut dovetail joints inside the drawers, cast bronze mounts secured with individual screws, and period-appropriate wear to the underside frame and gilding.

A bureau plat functions exceptionally well as a freestanding desk placed in the centre of a home office or library. Pair it with contemporary upholstered seating or clean-lined architectural lighting to create a refined contrast between period craftsmanship and modern design.

Keep the desk away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent veneer cracking and wood movement. Dust the gilt-bronze mounts regularly with a soft dry brush, treat the leather surface with specialised leather conditioner, and wax the timber veneer periodically with microcrystalline wax.
