Additionally, a larger key is included to unlock the brass bezel, which encloses a stunning painted dial in excellent condition. The dial is marked with the name “James McCabe, Royal Exchange, London” at the center, further elevating its historical significance.
James McCabe, born in Lurgan, Ireland, in 1748, was part of a family already immersed in the clockmaking trade. After emigrating to London in 1775, McCabe established his business on Fleet Street and later moved to the Royal Exchange in 1802. By the time of his death in 1811, McCabe’s firm was recognized for its exceptional quality. His legacy continued under the stewardship of his sons, who carried on the business until its closure in 1883, marking the end of over 100 years of prestigious craftsmanship.
McCabe’s clocks were renowned worldwide, especially in India, where his timepieces were held in the highest esteem. Notably, examples of his work were owned by notable figures such as Admiral Lord Horatio Nelson and American President George Washington.
