On the top of the lid mounted with brass cupid holding bird.

In very good original used condition, with beautiful original patination.

It is very rare to find this kind of birthing bowls in Pewter.

Decorated with wriggle-work decoration of flowers.

A birthing bowl, often termed an ecuelle, is a covered metal dish historically presented to mothers following childbirth to serve nourishing broths. These items typically feature detailed surface engraving, dual handles, and decorative finials.

These vessels were cast from pewter, an alloy consisting predominantly of tin mixed with copper or lead. Craftsmen used moulds for casting, hand-engraved floral motifs onto the metal body, and attached separately cast brass or bronze elements such as lid finials.

Authenticity is indicated by period-correct touchmarks on the base, minor surface irregularities from casting, hand-engraved decoration, and a matte grey patina created by natural oxidisation over time.
