Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An Edwardian kidney desk is a curved writing table produced during the reign of King Edward VII (19011910). Characterised by its concave front shape, fine wood veneers such as mahogany, decorative inlays, and elegant proportions, it was influenced by 18th-century French and Neo-classical Sheraton designs.

These desks were predominantly constructed using mahogany or rosewood, frequently adorned with satinwood or boxwood crossbanding and marquetry. The writing surface typically featured a gilded leather insert, complimented by brass drawer pulls, keyhole escutcheons, and polished brass gallery rails.

Authentic Edwardian pieces display hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, original brass castors, genuine timber grain, and age-consistent wear to the internal drawer linings. The inlay work should be flush with the surrounding veneer, showing natural patination rather than modern synthetic finishes.

A kidney desk works well positioned in the centre of a home office or library due to its finished back and rounded profile. It can also be paired with a neutral modern desk chair or used as a refined dressing table in a master bedroom.

Dust mahogany timber regularly with a soft, dry cloth and apply a beeswax polish annually following the grain direction. Leather inserts should be wiped gently with a slightly damp cloth and treated with a specialized leather conditioner to prevent cracking and drying.
