Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A drop flap occasional table is a compact piece of furniture equipped with hinged side leaves that can be raised to extend the surface area or folded down to save floor space. Popular from the late Victorian through the Edwardian eras, these tables were designed for flexibility in drawing rooms and parlours.

Edwardian inlaid furniture frequently utilised rich dense hardwoods such as rosewood, mahogany, or satinwood as the primary structure. Intricate marquetry patterns were created using contrasting light woods, such as boxwood, sycamore, or holly, often finished with brass castors.

Authentic period pieces display natural hand-cut wood grain variation in the marquetry veneers rather than printed patterns. The underside should feature period-appropriate joinery, wooden rule joints along the hinges, original brass castors, and natural age-related oxidisation on the timber.

A rosewood drop flap table functions as an elegant side table beside an armchair or sofa, offering adaptable surface area for drinks or lamps. Its compact footprint also makes it ideal for positioning in alcoves, reading nooks, or narrow hallways.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft dry cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish sparingly once or twice a year to nourish the wood. Keep the piece away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to prevent veneer drying, cracking, or fading.
