Set of 14 'James Reilly' Antique Victorian Mahogany Crown Splat & Bar Back Dining Chairs C1880

19th century
Description

Set of 14 Antique Crown Splat & Bar Back Solid Mahogany Dining Chairs.

An incredibly rare set of 14 Victorian Mahogany chairs.

We bring to you this very rare and impressive original set of Victorian (C1880) Mahogany dining chairs in almost pristine condition. The chairs are made by the well regarded and documented maker James Reilly of Manchester (1825-1889). Each chair is stamped to the underside with the makers name and also include the dated Kite registered trade mark to all of the backs.

The chairs feature a spectacular moulded crown splat & bar backs, flanked by turned rosettas with carved detailings around the top and and middle back rails. The chairs have drop in seat-pads which sit above its beautifully shaped straight moulded seat rails which goes to finely turned front legs typical of the Victorian style.

These chairs feature lovely original polish with a lightly faded colour with patina which have been sympathetically restored and carefully waxed in our workshop. These chairs have obviously been really looked after and cared for as it is incredibly rare to find a set of 14 Victorian chairs in such good condition, the majority of sets get broken up or chairs lost or broken. These chairs are of a very high quality, are made from all solid Mahogany with no loose joints or breaks.

The chairs have been recently re-covered and are currently covered in a Green textured flat weave material which is used but in fantastic clean condition, having being professionally wet cleaned in house at Lincoln Restorations. However, please do bare in mind it is used so does have the odd very minor blemish which are too small to picture. The padding is comfortable and traditionally padded, it is in fantastic order and they offer very comfortable and strong usable seating.

Please note: We can reupholster these chairs in a material of your choice if this material is not to your taste (for obvious added costs) if you enquire.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian dining chairs from the late 19th century typically feature rich mahogany timber, turned or carved front legs, and ornate backrests such as crown splats or balloon backs. Designed for formal dining rooms, these pieces combine sturdy joinery with comfortable upholstered drop-in or fixed seats.

Cabinetmakers during the Victorian era predominantly utilised dense hardwoods such as mahogany, oak, and walnut. Upholstery foundations relied on jute webbing, hand-tied steel coil springs, natural horsehair padding, and woven wool or silk fabrics.

Authentic pieces often exhibit hand-carved decoration, mortise and tenon joinery, and natural patination on the timber. Look for maker stamps or serial numbers impressed into the wooden frame, along with evidence of historical upholstery work on the seat rails.

A set of Victorian mahogany chairs can be paired with a minimalist oak or zinc-topped dining table to create visual contrast. Reupholstering the seat pads in contemporary neutral fabrics or subtle geometric patterns seamlessly integrates period seating into modern design schemes.

Keep mahogany furniture away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent wood shrinkage and finish fading. Apply a high-quality beeswax polish twice a year along the grain, and vacuum upholstery gently using a soft brush attachment.
