Olive Tree in the South of France, 1934 the Lake of Bages Near Narbonne French Two Coloured Ink Line Drawing on Paper

1920 - 1940
Description

A delicate, virtuoso line drawing of an area of natural beauty in the South of France, the region of the Bages lake, by Roger Grillon (1881-1938).

Born in Poitiers, Grillon studied at the initially at the Academy of Fine Arts in his home town and from 1900, at the École des Beaux-Arts de Paris, in the studio of Fernand Cormon.

However, he would soon tire of the Academy's conservative approach, and instead choose to study at independent academies, spending time with Matisse and Albert Marquet.

Similarly, while he initially exhibited at the very traditional Salon des Artistes Français, he soon came to prefer showing his work at the Salon des Indépendants and the Salon d'Automne. In 1926, Grillon had a one man show with Berthe Weill, the pioneering Paris gallerist who had provided Amedeo Modigliani with the only solo exhibition in his lifetime, and whose artists under contract included Raoul Dufy, André Derain, Maurice de Vlaminck, Diego Rivera, Georges Braque, Kees van Dongen and Maurice Utrillo.

A retrospective of the Grillon's work was held at the Petit Palais in Paris in 1939.

Roger Grillon moved from Paris to the South of France, first to Céret, then to Saint Paul de Vence, Prades and Lagrasse. The drawing presented here is situated "Etang de Bages" on the verso. The lake of Bages, just South of Narbonne, is not far from Lagrasse, so it is likely that the artist was living there at the time.

Measuring 25 x 35 cm, the drawing is signed and dated (19)34 at the lower left. The overall size in its original frame is 38 x 48 cm.

Works by Roger Grillon can be found in the museums of Algiers/Morocco, Angers, Albi, Carcassonne, Céret, Fontenay-le-Comte, La Rochelle, Grenoble, Troyes, as well as at the Musée du Luxembourg and the Musée National d''Art Moderne (Centre Georges Pompidou) in Paris.

In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Early 20th-century French landscape drawings frequently feature gestural line work, atmospheric wash techniques, and restrained colour palettes capturing rural views across regions such as Occitanie and Provence.

Artists traditionally used dip pens and fine brushes with carbon, sepia, or iron gall inks, combined with coloured washes or gouache applied directly onto cotton rag paper.

Authentic 1930s drawings display natural paper ageing such as gentle toning, hand-applied ink marks with varying pressure, and period artist signatures or date inscriptions.

Mounting the drawing in a contemporary acid-free mat with a simple dark wood or natural oak frame allows the organic ink linework to complement modern neutral colour schemes.

Keep works on paper away from direct sunlight, frame them behind UV-filtering glass, and use conservation-grade mount boards in a temperature-controlled environment.
