A Scottish pebble brooch is a style of Victorian jewellery that features indigenous stones, such as agates and jaspers, cut and fitted into sterling silver or gold mountings. These brooches became highly popular in the mid-to-late 19th century following Queen Victorias affection for Balmoral Castle.

Victorian Scottish agate jewellery traditionally features locally gathered minerals including red jasper, green bloodstone, banded agate, and yellow Cairngorm quartz or citrine. These stones are set within hand-engraved sterling silver frames, often styled with Celtic or floral motifs.

Authentic 19th-century pieces usually exhibit hand-engraved detail on the metal surround, hand-cut stone inlays, and characteristic Victorian closures such as long c-clasps or tubed hinges. While many Victorian silver pieces were not formally hallmarked, they often display precise lapidary work with close-fitting stone joins.

Scottish pebble brooches can be pinned to heavy fabrics such as wool coat lapels, tartan scarves, or knitwear to complement modern attire. Their geometric designs and natural earth tones integrate easily into both formal and everyday wardrobes.

Agate jewellery should be cleaned gently using a soft cloth and mild soapy water, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners that can damage natural stones. To prevent tarnish and scratches, store the brooch in a dry, fabric-lined box away from direct heat and moisture.
