18th Century George III Period Mahogany Antique Wine Cooler Cellarette

18th century
Description

Lovely little 18th century cellarette of unusual format with cupboard below a six bottle holder with lift up lid. This cellarette is made of a great cut of mahogany with contrast stringing around the edges, carrying handles to the sides and lock and key for both storage sections. This is a useful piece which can be used for holding bottles of course, but also useful as a bedside table, a wine table or plant stand on landing or hallway. This is a very charming piece of furniture made of good timber and with great patina, it has a delicacy of form and splay legs, diamond shaped escutcheons and also has an invoice from when it changed hands in 1995 for £2000.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Developed in 18th-century Britain during the George III period, a cellarette is a specialised wooden cabinet or chest designed to hold and cool wine bottles in formal dining rooms.

Georgian cellarettes were typically crafted from solid mahogany or satinwood, often featuring lead linings for ice storage, brass carrying handles, and boxwood inlay detailing.

Authentic Georgian pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetail joinery, period-correct brass hardware, original keyhole escutcheons, and natural oxidation or patina on unfinished interior surfaces.

A cellarette functions as an accent piece in a dining room, living area, or hallway, serving as a functional home bar cabinet or standalone decorative storage unit.

Preserve mahogany by dusting regularly with a dry cloth, applying high-quality beeswax twice yearly, avoiding direct sunlight, and keeping the item away from heat sources or damp environments.
