Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A gateleg table is a type of drop-leaf table introduced in the sixteenth century, gaining widespread popularity throughout the seventeenth century. It features hinged legs, known as gates, that swing outward to support raised flaps, offering an adaptable dining or display surface that collapses when not in use.

Seventeenth-century gateleg tables were primarily constructed using solid native English oak. Construction techniques involved hand-planed timber, mortise and tenon joinery secured with wooden pegs, and turned support legs connected by low box stretchers.

Authentic period examples display irregular hand-hewn surfaces, peg joinery visible at the joints, and uneven wear on lower stretchers where feet rested. Wooden rule joints along the table drop flaps and historic iron or wooden hinges also indicate age.

A gateleg table can serve as a console table against an entryway wall when the leaves are lowered. Fully expanded, it functions as an occasional dining table paired with contemporary or period seating to create contrast.

Routine maintenance requires dusting with a dry microfiber cloth and periodic application of natural beeswax to preserve the wood grain. The table should be kept away from direct heat sources and maintained in stable relative humidity to prevent wood shrinkage or splitting.
