Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Gateleg tables originated in England during the sixteenth century as space-saving solutions for homes with limited floor space. Featuring hinged legs that swing out like gates to support folding flaps, the design gained widespread popularity during the Jacobean era and experienced notable revivals in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Traditional gateleg tables are constructed from dense hardwoods such as oak, walnut, or mahogany. Joints are typically fashioned using mortise and tenon joinery, while the legs often showcase hand-turned details including barley twist or baluster designs connected by lower stretchers.

Authentic period gateleg tables display unevenness in hand-carved spiral turnings, signs of historic wear along the lower stretcher rails, and aged iron or wooden hinges beneath the flaps. Examining the underside often reveals tool marks and natural timber shrinkage consistent with age.

A compact gateleg table can serve as an occasional side table, a hallway console with the leaves dropped, or a dining surface for smaller spaces. Pairing the timber structure with contemporary seating or placing modern ceramics on the surface creates an engaging contrast.

To preserve the timber finish, apply a high-quality bees wax polish once or twice a year using a soft cloth. Keep the table away from direct heat sources and sudden humidity changes to prevent the solid oak from warping or cracking.
