Antique Bidjar Rug

Description

Woven in a Kurdish town in West Persia - Bidjar rugs are famous for weaving tough carpets and rugs in varying designs.  This antique Bidjar rug uses the 'Herati' fish design in the rare four yellow corner spandrels.  The deep reds and blues with faded and corroded browns for the main border.  An ancient and rustic feel and dye palette on this delightful antique rug, woven around 1880-1890 making it over 130 years old.

Bidjar rugs originate from the Kurdish town of Bidjar in northwestern Iran, renowned for their heavy, extremely dense weave and exceptional durability. They typically feature intricate central medallions, Herati patterns, and rich, vegetable-dyed colour palettes.

Traditional Bidjar carpets are hand-knotted using high-quality wool pile woven onto a durable cotton or wool foundation. Weavers compact the wet wool threads with heavy iron combs during knotting, creating a compact structure often referred to as the iron rug of Persia.

Authentic hand-knotted Persian rugs exhibit slight variations in pattern symmetry and colour shades, known as abrash, resulting from natural dye batches. On the reverse side, individual hand-tied knots are clearly visible and mirror the pile pattern precisely.
