Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An antique oak coffer is a heavy wooden storage chest with a hinged lid, historically used in European households to secure linens, clothing, and valuables prior to the widespread adoption of chests of drawers.

Early coffers were constructed predominantly from solid oak using mortise and tenon joinery secured with wooden pegs. They often feature hand-carved friezes, floating panels to accommodate timber movement, and forged iron lock plates.

Authentic pieces display evidence of hand-hewn timber, peg construction, historical wear around the base and lid, and hand-forged ironwork. Original surfaces show uneven patination, oxidisation around iron fittings, and signs of age consistent with period woodworking.

An antique coffer functions as a practical storage solution at the foot of a bed, within an entryway, or positioned as a coffee table in a living space. Its rich timber tone creates contrast when placed against contemporary neutral walls.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft, dry cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to preserve the timber patina. Keep the piece away from direct heat sources and excessive moisture to prevent warping or splitting.
