Description

An original and traditional Wedgewood Caneware pie dish with a rabbit handle. The dish is allover decorated with game birds and vines bearing grapes. It is in very good condition with only one very tiny hairline crack to to the inside of the lid. It doesn't go right through to the outer lid and really is small (2cm) See photo.

These pie dishes were made to look like pastry hence the colour.circa 1870

Ceramic game pie dishes were developed in England during the late eighteenth century, largely in response to flour shortages that made pastry crusts costly. Potters crafted unglazed buff-coloured earthenware containers designed to imitate the appearance of baked pastry crusts for serving game stews.

Caneware is an unglazed buff or tan stoneware body pioneered by Josiah Wedgwood in the 1780s. These pieces feature relief-moulded external decorations created from press-moulds, while the interior is usually coated with a clear lead glaze to render it non-porous.
