Description

A lovely quality early 19th Century mahogany bureau bookcase with later (Edwardian) cornice, the highly decorative carved pierced fret swan neck pediment with a central box column with further carved floral decoration, the top section having two astrigal glazed doors opening to reveal three adjustable shelves inside, the bureau fall opening to reveal a lovely fitted interior with various oak lined drawers with the original brassware and four compartments, below the fall are four long oak lined graduated drawers with brass ring handles and escutcheons, standing on bracket feet. Circa 1830.

Martlesham Antiques is a family run business and has been trading since 1984. Located in Suffolk just outside Woodbridge, Martlesham Antiques is run from a spacious thatched cottage housing nine large showrooms with a vast adjacent car park.

Specialising in 18th and 19th Century furniture, together with creating custom hand-made furniture which is supplied to various interior designers, trade and the retail market. Every piece on the showroom floor is in excellent condition and ready to go straight into the buyers home or premises.

All of Martlesham Antiques furniture is hand polished by their own French polishers and restorers to a very high standard. We are also a member of LAPADA, the association of art and antiques.

A bureau bookcase is a two-part item of furniture combining a slant-front writing desk at the base with a glazed display cabinet above. Originating in the 18th century, this dual-function design integrated writing workspace with secure book storage.

Early 19th-century bureau bookcases were primarily constructed using solid mahogany or mahogany veneers applied over pine or oak cores. Drawer linings were commonly built from oak or pine using hand-cut dovetail joinery, fitted with cast brass handles.

Authentic pieces from this era display hand-cut dovetail joints on the drawers, original hand-blown glass panes within the astragal glazing, and hand-sawn secondary timber on the backboards. Natural age-related wear around the keyholes and drawer runners is also standard.

Position the piece as a focal point against a neutral backdrop to highlight the dark mahogany timber. Curate the upper glazed shelves with modern ceramics and books, and utilise the drop-down slope as a functional modern writing desk.
