Antique Satsuma Earthenware Vase, Japan, C. 19th Century

19th century
Description

This exquisite antique Satsuma vase, dating from the Japanese Meiji period (1868-1912), exemplifies the exceptional craftsmanship and artistry for which Satsuma ware is renowned. The vase, of square baluster form, is hand-painted in muted tones, featuring intricate designs within four cartouches. Each cartouche is adorned with beautifully rendered scenes depicting Japanese figures amidst natural landscapes, birds in flight, and a goose among flowering branches.

The cobalt blue background is richly decorated with gilded ornaments in an oriental style, complemented by delicate gold-painted butterflies around the neck. Both the top and bottom edges are elegantly gilded in a circular pattern, enhancing the piece's refined appearance. The vase is signed on the bottom with the Shimazu family crest and the name Harita Ryokuzan, a known exporter of Satsuma ware active in Kyoto at the end of the 19th century. This signature confirms the vase as a genuine piece from the period and region.

Satsuma ware originated in the southern regions of Kyushu, Japan, under the rule of the Shimazu clan. The production of Satsuma ceramics began around the early 1600s, originally featuring plain, dark clay forms. By the 19th century, Satsuma ware had evolved significantly, particularly with the introduction of intricate designs and decorations tailored for export to Western markets. This vase is an exemplary piece of this later period, showcasing the delicate beauty and skilled craftsmanship characteristic of Satsuma ware.

The Meiji period marked a time of great change in Japan, including the opening of the country to Western trade and the development of decorative arts for export. Satsuma pieces from this period, such as this vase, are highly valued for their artistic quality and historical significance, reflecting the elegance and cultural richness of Meiji-era Japan.

Dimensions: Height 19 cm, width 8.5 cm, depth 8.5 cm. Weight 549 grams.

Condition: A piece of the base of the vase is chipped off. Otherwise, the vase is in excellent antique condition.
