Fine Georgian Five Pillar Longcase Clock,

£3,000    $4,002    €3,566
Clockwise is delighted to present a superb eight day longcase clock having just enjoyed full and sympathetic restorations performed to the case, dial and movement. Dating from circa 1770 and credited to William Budgen who worked from Croydon and London between 1750 and 1816 this fine Georgian clock is in excellent condition and stands an imposing 2.26m (7 feet 5 inches) tall. The case is a beautiful flame mahogany, of good colour and patina. This antique clock case has all the features of a London clock of the period such as a long moulded trunk door, double plinth base, brass inlayed hood columns and is indeed typical of a high quality case of excellent proportions, very much in the style employed by the finest makers of the late Georgian period, often referred to as a Fleet Street style case and attributed to the Rich family workshop. A quality brass keyhole insert has just been fitted to the trunk door.

The eight day FIVE pillar movement strikes via a rack on a sonorous bell and has an anchor escapement; it is in excellent condition and has just been restored and as such benefits from my three year guarantee. The date function and strike/silent lever work as they should and the hood is adorned with brass fretwork to the side panels and above the arch with similarly inlaid reeded pillars and brass topped quarter pillars to the hood rear. Brass casings to the lead weights add to the ''London'' feel of this clock. The 12 inch broken arch plain painted white dial is in fantastic condition and is complimented by five original matching hands with the maker''s name to the dial.

This famous dynasty of clockmakers (Thomas, William and John) worked from both Croydon and London from 1700 until 1861 and William supplied the clock for Croydon minster. Even at auction Budgen clocks command a high price due to the sheer quality of the workmanship, similar to McCabe and other London-centric makers.

All in all this is a super example of a high quality Georgian ''London'' longcase, with an excellent patination and colour. Delivery and set-up is available.
