George III Sheraton Period Painted Knife Box, C.1790

Description

A rare and splendid Georgian Sheraton period painted mahogany knife box, c.1790. Serial number stamped to the inside lid. Later converted for stationary.

The box is of serpentine form with satinwood and boxwood inlay throughout. Every side is exquisitely painted, depicting fruits, flowers, musical instruments and putti. The lid opens to reveal a later fitted interior with various neat compartments for stationary and correspondence.

There are some losses to the interior edges (please see photographs). Key absent.

A truly stunning example of Sheraton period design.
