The sitter has that “knowing” look ~ almost as though to say: “I know what you are up to…”. This is a captivating portrait clearly executed by a talented and highly professional artist.

The canvas is in a very good quality frame with overall dimensions of 30ins high and 25ins wide (76 x 63cms) ~ so impressive yet not too large. Thoroughly recommended. c1765-1770.
Allan Ramsay (1713-1784) born in Edinburgh, from the age of twenty studied in London under the Swedish artist Hans Hysing, leaving in 1736 for further studies in Rome and Naples. His highly regarded work is notable for its “French elegance” and soft colours, and his sitters are often shown full of grace and individuality. He stopped painting in 1770 and he died in 1784 following the death of his beloved second wife in 1782 and ill health following the accidental dislocation of his right arm.
