A George III Mahogany Hunt or Possibly Campaign Table, Edinburgh, C1780

18th century
For Sale by Jeckyll & Co
Description

A rare, refined and beautifully made table with detachable leaf for ease of transport.

A useful size too: 73cm high x 145cm x 144cm

The near circular top is supported on a laminated frame. The leaf is held in place with extended hinges that can be bolted from the underside. My friend @jamesrhardie, has seen similar hinges on a massive table probably made by William Trotter, (Young, Trotter & Hamilton).

The leaf can be easily removed and assembled and the top sections fit together perfectly.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A George III hunt table, also known as a wake or horseshoe table, was originally designed in the late 18th century for serving drinks and refreshments after fox hunting or social gatherings. These versatile tables frequently feature folding drop leaves that allow them to be reconfigured from a narrow console into a wide dining surface.

18th-century hunt tables were predominantly constructed from solid cuban mahogany or dense honduran mahogany due to its stability and deep, rich grain. The internal framework often utilised pine or oak as secondary timbers, fitted with brass hinges or iron leg supports.

Authentic 18th-century pieces display signs of hand-craftsmanship, such as hand-sawn timber marks, hand-cut dovetail or mortise-and-tenon joints, and slight irregularities in dimensions. The timber should show genuine oxidation and depth of patina where light has naturally aged the wood over centuries.

A Georgian drop-leaf table can be styled against a dining room wall with both leaves lowered as a console, or positioned centrally with leaves extended to serve as a dining table. Pairing the dark mahogany wood with contemporary linen upholstered chairs creates a balanced contrast between historic craftsmanship and modern textures.

Maintain mahogany furniture by dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth and applying a pure beeswax polish once or twice a year in the direction of the wood grain. Keep the table away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent timber shrinkage, splitting, or fading of the original patina.
