Description

A rare Victorian glass dump or paperweight. This wonderful piece is in bottle green glass and features a double sided Scottish Thistle. The body is ovoid with a flattened base for stability. With a number of uses, this is an attractive and very collectable example. Dimensions below.

A glass dump is a heavy object made from slag glass or leftover molten glass at the end of a shift in 19th-century British glasshouses. Originally created by glassworkers to take home or sell independently, these pieces were shaped into domes and used as doorstops or desktop paperweights.

Sulphide inserts, known as crystallo-ceramie, were produced by embedding a pre-fired ceramic cameo into molten glass while hot. As the glass cooled around the ceramic object, it expanded slightly to trap the motif inside without cracking, creating a silvery visual effect.

Authentic 19th-century glass dumps typically feature heavy bottle-green glass, natural pontil marks or rough bases where they were separated from the blowpipe, and characteristic internal inclusions such as air bubbles, foil flowers, or ceramic sulphides.

These heavy glass pieces function well as functional paperweights on a timber office desk, structured bookends on a library shelf, or tactile decorative accents on a mantelpiece.

Clean heavy glass dumps using a soft lint-free cloth dampened with warm water and mild soap. Avoid abrasive pads, harsh chemicals, or sudden temperature changes that could stress the internal inclusions.
