Mother-of-pearl Miniature Portrait Of An Unknown Man, C. 18th Century

Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: Gillers Antiques Ltd

This is a finely carved mother-of-pearl portrait of an unknown man in profile, dating back to the 18th century. The bust is meticulously attached to a guilloche metal backing and is protected by an oval glass set in a gilt rim. The entire piece is mounted in a black wooden frame. The portrait is carved with great detail and realism, showcasing the skill of a true master.

I have not been able to find any comparable pieces on the antique market. Carving a realistic portrait from mother-of-pearl is an incredibly challenging task, far more difficult than using paints. This is a unique miniature, and I believe it was originally housed in a different frame.

Dimensions: The frame measures 10cm x 12.5cm, while the portrait itself is 6.5cm x 5.2cm.

Condition: The frame shows scratches and paint scuffs consistent with its age. The mother-of-pearl portrait itself is in immaculate condition.

Please study the attached photos carefully, as they form an integral part of this description. The item will be shipped with full tracking and insurance. Please note that shipping costs include labor, packaging, and postage.
