Technical Description
A rare Hanoverian Williamite Anti Jacobite wine glass dating to c1750.
It has a drawn trumpet bowl engraved with the word LIBERTY above a horse. With the death of Queen Ann in 1714, the British throne passed to George of Hanover (George I). His heraldry in Hanover, included a white horse on a red background, known in German as the ‘Sachsenross’ and in English as ‘the White Horse of Hanover.’ On the reverse we have a Jacobite Rose with a single bud and a budless thorny stem.
The glass signifies that the Jacobite cause had had its head cut off and that England had been liberated by the Hanoverian king.
Sits on a plain teared stem above a conical foot.
