Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Elbow chairs, often referred to as carver or open armchairs, feature raised side supports designed to rest the arms comfortably. Historically crafted in mahogany during the Georgian, Chippendale, and Hepplewhite eras, they were traditionally positioned at the head and foot of formal dining tables or used as occasional study seating.

These chairs typically feature solid mahogany frames known for dense grain and durability, constructed using mortise and tenon joinery. The backs often display intricate piercing or carving, while seats are padded and upholstered over a wooden frame, supported by shaped cabriole or turned legs.

Authentic examples show signs of hand-carved detailing, natural shrinkage around joinery, and an accumulated patina from age and handling. Inspecting the underside of the seat frame often reveals hand-cut corner blocks and traditional frame webbing methods.

A pair of mahogany carvers works exceptionally well flanking a hall table, positioned on either side of a fireplace, or placed at the ends of a contemporary dining table to create visual contrast. They can also serve as functional desk chairs in a home office setting.

To preserve the timber finish, dust regularly with a soft cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year in the direction of the grain. Upholstery should be vacuumed gently using a soft brush attachment and kept out of direct sunlight to prevent fading.
