Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Transferware refers to earthenware decorated using an engraved copper plate that transfers a pattern onto paper, which is then applied to the ceramic prior to glazing and firing. Popular during the Georgian era, this method allowed intricate architectural, historical, and floral imagery to be reproduced on blue and white tablewares.

Jugs from this period were typically crafted from earthenware or pearlware and coated in a transparent lead glaze. The decoration was produced using cobalt blue oxide underglaze, selected for its ability to withstand high temperatures during kiln firing.

Authentic pieces from around 1830 frequently display minor print alignment seams where the paper pattern joined, fine stippling from hand-engraved plates, and visible pooling of bluish lead glaze near the footrim. Maker marks or printed cartouches on the underside also aid in identification.

Incorporate an antique transferware jug into modern decor by displaying it as a standalone accent on a sideboard, mantelpiece, or open kitchen shelf. It can function as a vessel for fresh floral displays or be grouped alongside modern monochrome ceramics for tonal contrast.

Hand wash early earthenware using warm water and a mild detergent, avoiding abrasive sponges, harsh chemicals, and dishwashers. To avoid crazing or staining of the porous body, do not submerge the ceramic for long periods or subject it to thermal shock.
