Beautiful Antique Single Fusee Miniature Balloon Clock in Full Working Order

19th century
Description

Beautiful Antique Single Fusee Miniature Balloon Clock In Full Working Order.

This beautiful miniature balloon clock has a mahogany case with a wonderful rich colour and grain. Starting the the top there is a lovely brass “acorn” finial sat on top of a shaped section. This then leads to the typical “balloon” shaped body of the case. There is then an array of intricate mouldings to the arched base with set the piece off wonderfully. Finally it is finished by four lovely shaped brass feet.

The dial is then enamel and set out in black Roman numerals with a thin ring to the outside marking the minutes. The dial then has two intricately shaped hands as well as a domed, protective glass set into a brass bezel.

The movement is then both wound and accessed from the back. It is ticking away as it should and comes complete with its winding key. It is then a single fusee example on a balance wheel which is rare in itself, but to see a fusee movement of this size is unheard of!

Would make an absolutely fantastic addition to any home or collection.

It measures approximately:

- 10.5” / 26.5cm Tall.

- 5.75” / 14.5cm Wide.

- 2.75” / 7cm Deep.

Declaration

N Wilson Antiques Clocks has dated this Mahogany Fusee Balloon Clock to the 1880s.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A balloon clock is a distinct style of mantel timepiece characterised by its waisted wooden case shaped like a hot air balloon, a style that emerged in Britain during the late 18th century and remained popular through the Regency era.

These clocks are typically constructed with fine dark wood cases, such as polished mahogany or satinwood, paired with brass fittings, white enamel dials, steel hands, and precision mechanical brass movements.

Authentic period examples feature hand-cut gears, hand-enamelled dial faces with Roman numerals, a waist silhouette with cast brass fittings, and a mechanical fusee movement rather than modern quartz mechanisms.

Position the clock as a focal point on a fireplace mantelpiece, bookshelf, or sideboard, complementing neutral walls or dark wood cabinetry in traditional and dark academia interiors.

Keep the clock in a stable environment away from direct heat sources and moisture, wind the mechanical movement regularly with a matching key, and have the internal mechanism serviced by a professional horologist every few years.
