A surprising, mysterious, scintillating nude accompanied by a dove. It is a work by Southern French artist Pierre Albert Génolhac (b. 1896), who entered the Fine Arts Academy in Nice in 1917. While his academic training remained evident in the thoughtfulness of his composition, Genholac quickly developed an enthusiasm for the search for unexpected colour combinations and liberated lines. In the present painting, bold contrasts of light and dark sublimate the figure of the woman in a manner that is old masterly as well as resolutely modern.
Gernolhac moved to Paris in 1919 to meet painters who had the same aesthetic concerns as him, such as Paul Serusier and Maurice Denis with whom he worked.
Upon his return to Nice, he found the ''L''Effort'' group of expressionist artists who included painters such as Victor Bourgeois , Émile Voizard and Henri Tricker.
Genholac exhibited at the Salon d''Automne from 1925 and his work was shown at international art fairs in France, Norway, Portugal and Poland.
In Paris, he had several one man shows at the Galerie Drouant. Works by the artist are today in the Petit Palais and the Museum of the City of Paris, the museums of Arles, Aix, Moustiers, Nice, Marseilles and Nîmes, among others.
