Two Habitual Drunkard Cards from Newport Police 1903

1900 - 1920
Description

Two 'Habitual Drunkard' cards issued by Newport Borough Police, 1903. The photographic cards were issued to all publicans and included the addreses and identifying features of individuals convicted of habitual drunkenness who were banned from all pubs. They served as a warning to landlords that if found supplying alcohol to the individuals they would be fined £10.

The descriptions of the two women show a snapshot in to what must have been a difficult and gruelling life. Margaret Sullivan is described as having a 'long scar right side of forehead, three moles on chin, surly looking, loud talker'. Her occupation is noted as 'Married woman'. Ann Dunn is described as having a 'sallow complexion' with a' scar corner of right eye'. Her occupation is a 'Charwoman'.  A sad and poignant piece of social history.

In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
