Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A lowboy is an 18th-century small table or chest of drawers, typically featuring three to four drawers arranged above a shaped apron and supported on cabriole or turned legs. Originating in the Queen Anne and Georgian periods, it was primarily designed as a dressing table or occasional side table.

English lowboys of this era were predominantly constructed from solid oak, walnut, or mahogany. Key construction features include hand-dovetailed drawer linings, solid timber backboards, shaped kneehole aprons, and cast brass drop handles with backplates.

Authentic period lowboys display hand-sawn timber marks, irregular hand-cut dovetail joints, original drawer runners showing uneven historical wear, and natural oxidation on the undersides of the timber and brass fittings.

An antique lowboy functions effectively as a hallway console table, a compact home office writing desk, or a side table in a living room. Pairing its warm oak patina with contemporary lighting or modern art creates an engaging balance of periods.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft, dry cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish twice yearly to nourish the timber. Position the piece away from direct heat sources and extreme humidity fluctuations to prevent timber movement and cracking.
