Unusual Georgian Mahogany Library Table

18th century
Description

A fine and unusual Georgian library table in mahogany. The table stands on a tripod base with beautifully shaped legs terminating in spade feet. The central baluster column is finely turned in solid Cuban mahogany. The top serves two functions both a writing surface and reading lectern. The top lifts to be secured at various angles for reading and can be laid flat for writing, the interior would be for the storage of papers etc. There are two retractable candles stands situated on either side of the table. The whole is beautifully veneered using quality figured mahogany and it has a great untouched patina and colour. The leather surface is the original, it has a wonderful patina and a great faded country house look. The whole is a wonderful piece of late Georgian furniture in excellent condition, and would work well as a side or lamp table. C.1810.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Georgian library tables typically feature classical proportions, solid mahogany construction, and often incorporate leather writing surfaces, turned pedestals, or tripod bases designed for scholarly use during the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.

Primary woods included Cuban or West Indian mahogany, frequently paired with hand-carved turned columns, brass fittings, and gold-tooled or blind-tooled leather writing inserts.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-sawn timber markings beneath the top, original joinery such as hand-cut dovetails, genuine age-related wear, and an unrefined patina across the wood and leather surfaces.

Place the table alongside contemporary seating or in a study nook to create a functional accent piece, pairing the warm timber tones with modern lighting or sculptural decorative items.

Clean timber surfaces with a dry cloth and apply beeswax sparingly, while treating the leather inset with dedicated leather conditioner to prevent drying and cracking.
