Antique Caucasian Moghan Kazak Rug, Hooked Medallion Design, Circa 1880.

19th century
Description

Size: 6ft 11in x 3ft 11in (210 x 119cm).

Antique Caucasian Moghan Kazak rug with a vertical row of four hooked medallions on a madder red ground.

Circa 1880.

A good example of a Moghan Kazak rug with the well known hooked medallion design, this example is interesting as each medallion is separated by a dotted line into its own compartment. I like the way that the weaver has made the fifth medallion appear to be disappearing under the borders at the top of the rug. The wide ivory ground border is of a classic Caucasian design.

The rug is in excellent condition with slight even wear and good pile.

The rug is suitable for normal domestic use.

The rug has been hand washed and is ready for use or display.

Stock Number: R-2679.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Caucasian Moghan Kazak rugs originate from the Caucasus region and are known for their geometric compositions, particularly series of hooked diamond or Memling-style medallions down a central field, framed by multiple decorative borders.

These rugs are hand-knotted using hand-spun sheeps wool for both the pile and the foundation (warp and weft), coloured using natural plant and mineral dyes.

Authentic pieces display hand-knotted wool construction, subtle colour variations (abrash) from natural dye batches, pliable wool foundations, and geometric motifs characteristic of Caucasian tribal weaving traditions.

A geometric Caucasian rug adds warmth and historical texture to modern interiors, functioning as a focal point in hallways, living rooms, or beneath neutral contemporary furniture.

Vacuum regularly using suction only without a rotating beater bar, rotate periodically to ensure even wear, protect from direct prolonged sunlight, and consult a specialist restorer for professional washing.
